A Bed and Breakfast: Why it’s the Perfect Stay!
When planning a getaway, primarily a short-term retreat, the accommodation you choose plays a major role in shaping your experience. While large hotels and private vacation rentals have their appeal, there is something truly special about staying at a hosted bed-and-breakfast (B&B). This charming form of accommodation, steeped in history, offers more than just a place to sleep – they provide a warm, welcoming atmosphere that makes your stay unforgettable.
What is a B&B and why you should stay at one…

The concept of a bed and breakfast (B&B) has been around for centuries, evolving from ancient traditions of hospitality. The idea of offering travelers a place to rest and a meal has been a fundamental part of human culture, appearing in various forms across different civilizations. In ancient civilizations like Greece and Rome, hospitality was a sacred duty. Travelers were often offered lodging and meals by private households, monasteries, or inns. During the Middle Ages, monasteries and religious institutions frequently provided shelter and food to pilgrims traveling to holy sites. This practice laid the foundation for future B&B-style accommodations.
By the 17th and 18th centuries, private homes in Europe, particularly in the countryside, began offering accommodations to travelers. These were often small, family-run establishments that provided lodging and breakfast.
If we fast-forward to the rise of the modern B&B, after WWII, European B&Bs gained popularity as an affordable way for travelers to experience local hospitality. Many war-ravaged countries encouraged tourism through small, family-run accommodations.
In North America, the modern B&B movement in Canada began in the 1960s and 1970s, as travelers sought unique, personalized stays rather than corporate hotels. Historic homes were often converted into guesthouses.
1980s-today, the contemporary B&B has become more structured, with official associations, industry regulations, and luxury amenities catering to higher-end travelers.
The allure of unique spaces and the feeling of ‘home away from home’; there’s something about staying at a traditional bed and breakfast that goes beyond just providing a roof over your head. Especially for travelers looking to explore a new area, a B&B experience, complete with warm, welcoming hosts, offers an edge that’s often unmatched.
Here’s why a B&B is the perfect place to stay for your next getaway…
Your Personal Concierge and Local Expert

For starters, you’ll never find a better source of information on the area you are staying in than a bed and breakfast host. They are your one-stop source for the most valuable and useful details on the local area and all it has to offer for visitors. If you’re looking for recommendations on where to eat, where to shop, what to see, or where to explore, a quick question to your B&B host is all it takes to learn about the best places to go. Think of them as your own personal concierge, providing guidance and advice that the average tourist may not know about. Plus, they can help you plan out your adventures so that you’ll make the most of your time there. Avoiding underwhelming and crowded tourist traps, getting to those must-see spots at the best possible times, and visiting the most amazing restaurants is so much easier with the help of a local expert like your B&B host.
Meet International Travelers & Make Friendships
Frequent visitors to B&Bs often remark about how nice it is to have the opportunity to meet new people during their stay. The clientele at a bed and breakfast can be quite diverse, but often guests will discover similar interests with each other as they have casual conversations over a delicious breakfast in the morning. It can be fascinating to learn about the stories of other travelers, some of whom may have traveled a great distance! In some cases, these interactions quickly form strong bonds of friendship, further adding to the positive experience of staying at a B&B.
This has been one of the rewarding parts of running our B&B, is meeting the brilliant and fascinating people who have stayed with us. It is equally rewarding when we hear our guests exchanging email addresses and looking to stay in touch with each other, what could be better than to meet some new friends and acquaintances on your vacation.
Unforgettable B&B Breakfasts, are More Than a Meal – It’s an Experience!
Breakfast at a B&B isn’t just a meal; it’s often an experience that starts your day off right, with warm conversation, freshly prepared dishes, and for us at, On The Rocks, having breakfast in our breakfast bistro, our ‘sticky-beak bistro’ overlooking Georgian Bay is something very special all by itself!
Owners and operators of B&Bs take great pride in creating the kinds of breakfasts that are unlike anything you’ll find anywhere else. Many bed and breakfast hosts source their ingredients from local farms and merchants, serving homemade, locally-inspired breakfasts that give guests a taste of the region’s flavours. You’ll find things like farm fresh eggs, meats from local butchers, fresh fruit and vegetables, homemade bread and pastries; here at On The Rocks, Val’s homemade sourdough bread, breakfast scones (raspberry and white chocolate are my personal favourites!) and Maldon flake salt chocolate-chip cookies are some of our guest’s favourites!
Here at On The Rocks Guest Inn, we’ve playfully dubbed our morning meals as the ‘No Lunch Breakfasts’, and many of our guests wholeheartedly agree!
No Chores and No Excessive Fees
When you stay at a B&B there are no ‘cleaning fees’ or ‘host fees’, so you can relax and not have to worry about additional fees and who is doing the dishes and what to do with the garbage! When you stay at a bed and breakfast there are no chores, no hidden fees, just rest and relaxation.
Safety and Consistency
When it comes to B&Bs, there’s a level of trust and assurance that your stay is safe and secure. B&Bs are licensed, often inspected, drinking water for example is tested quarterly by the health unit to ensure it is safe for the public to drink. A B&B tends to offer consistent quality in terms of cleanliness, service, and amenities. Plus, with an onsite host, there’s always someone available to assist in case of an emergency or to handle any concerns that may happen. So, you know that should anything arise, the host is on-site and can assist and manage whatever occurs.
We have had on a couple of occasions guests that require medical assistance, which we were able to assist with and ensure they were supported and looked after.
The Feel-Good Factor of Supporting Small Businesses
Choosing a B&B supports small business owners who are genuinely invested in providing excellent hospitality. Many B&Bs are family-owned or run by people with a passion for their region, and they rely on each guest to keep their business alive. Knowing that your travel dollars are helping support a small, community-centered business can add an extra layer of satisfaction to your stay. By supporting small businesses and shopping locally, you're supporting real, genuine people who have put their passion ahead of convenience and whole-heartedly believe in the business they are running. By choosing a Canadian destination, travelers help sustain local business, from tour operators, artisans, restaurants, inns and markets.
